Day Three

Ever eastwards - and the castle that got away!

Yesterday the weather had warmed from 15 to 25 degrees but we had experienced rain, drizzle, fog and some sunshine. Today it looked sunny and bright and the top came down on the car!

Our first stop was Kromeriz, a UNESCO site about an hour east of Brno. The city square was spacious, as are many in this part of the country. And just as in Pisek, the houses were painted in pastel colours and had the columns and arches, presumably where people had stood in the old days and sold their goods. However, Krozemir is somewhat younger and here the buildings are overwhelmingly from the Jugendstil or Art nouveau period of 1880-1920. However, many of the facades were very pretty.

We made our way to the castle and found the gardens. Free entrance - always good! A mixture of formal and informal or French and English, with English winning. And under the trees a group of birds!

We had arrived just as a falconer was setting up his birds for a show in front of 25 schoolchildren. Even four of the kids were allowed to receive the bird when it landed.

Back into town and then to another flower garden before leaving.

And then the castle that got away! I had read in google maps about a castle near where we wanted to stay overnight. Hence we drove off the road to find a castle at a hamlet called Su´lov. Although we followed the road and climbed a hill we saw no castle. However, the view was breathtaking! Later, on the internet I realised we had been looking at the casle most of the time.

The ruined castle on the hill, left above.

Strangely one could only see these mountains from this valley. From the main road we had beautiful scenery, but more like parts of Oberbayern or high hills - no beautifully majestic mountains like these.

We made up for it though by stopping at Zilina Castle for a short break: a pretty white-washed castle, again with lovely park and here in Strecno, this evening: a lovely ruin on the hill above the river Vah.
