DAY SEVEN

From Sucevita to Gheorgheni - slowly moving southwards

In the north of Romania there are several of these lovely painted churches. Today we visited three more but it is soon apparent that they are all built to the same pattern. The church has the same basic shape and there are three rooms as you go in past a sort of open lobby. The difference is often only in how ornate the dividing wall is in the last room, this was designed to separate the parishioners from the god. The priest went freely from one to the other taking the prayers of the churchgoers to god and relaying his messages back. Sucevita, as with Moldovita yesterday, are the two of the most beautiful examples. Their pictures, dating from mid-1500s being well preserved.

From there we toured two more monasteries and took many photos. The representation of the Final Judgement is especially interesting. The documents on one side - representing good deeds - and the papers on the other - bad actions - with the devils trying to tip the balance.

Then moving south to reach the second monastery the road seemed to be closed. The sign was not clear but the state of the road was.

Rolf, never one to be put off by the absence of a road, did the English thing - carry on regardless. While I hung on to anything within reach, he avoided the large stones and the even larger holes in the road. Once past this obstacle (after 3 kilometers) I spotted some tents that looked like a market. That coupled with some pretty horses encouraged Rolf to slow the car. Time to explore!

Harvest Festival in Solonețu Nou, Romania. About ten dance groups had gathered and after the church service would have performed. It is amazing how even young Romanians are happy to speak English.

We wanted to be further on so had to miss the dancing but Rolf caught some of the practising - or showing off!!!!

Our last real stop of the day was a castle - hooray! Nothing religious! The city of Targu Neamt lay on our route.

We then spent three hours journeying south. A large lake / reservoir / dam lay on our route as well a as a narrow canyon. Romania has a lot to offer the tourist.

We arrived at our overnight stay quite late - no restaurant, no bar, only a small triangular shaped hut with two single beds. Good Night!
